Georgia DPS urges safe Memorial Day weekend travel as statewide patrols increase

The Georgia Department of Public Safety is urging motorists traveling during the Memorial Day holiday weekend to make safety a priority, including avoiding impaired and distracted driving, buckling up and practicing responsible driving behaviors.

According to the press release, Georgia State Patrol troopers and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement officers will increase patrols statewide during the holiday travel period.

The agency said enforcement will focus on speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving, seat belt violations and other dangerous driving behaviors.

The release states the holiday travel period will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, May 22, and end Monday, May 25, at midnight, for a total of 78 hours.

The press release also cites 2025 Memorial Day holiday enforcement figures, saying the Georgia State Patrol investigated 331 traffic crashes that resulted in 120 injuries and six traffic deaths. It also said troopers and CVE officers arrested 400 people for DUI during that period.

The release includes a statement attributed to DPS Commissioner Colonel William W. Hitchens, III, who urged people celebrating the holiday weekend to do so responsibly and safely.

The press release says AAA projects 39.1 million people will travel by car over Memorial Day weekend and lists INRIX as a source.
