A Georgia Department of Public Safety press release says the 78-hour holiday period from July 2 through July 5 included 12 traffic-related deaths statewide, more than 295 crashes investigated by troopers and preliminary figures that may change.
The Georgia Department of Public Safety said in a July 6 press release that 12 people died in traffic-related incidents statewide during the 78-hour Independence Day holiday travel period.
According to the release, Georgia State Patrol troopers investigated nine fatal traffic crashes, while local agencies investigated three additional fatalities.
The holiday reporting period began at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 2, and ended at 11:59 p.m. Sunday, July 5, the agency said.
The release says the Atlanta Police Department, Cobb County Sheriff's Office and Richmond County Sheriff's Office reported fatal crashes during the period.
In addition to the fatalities, troopers investigated more than 295 traffic crashes statewide, including 15 involving commercial motor vehicles, and those crashes resulted in more than 180 injuries, according to the release.
Georgia State Patrol troopers and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement officers also conducted 20,208 traffic stops, issued 10,806 citations and 14,657 warnings, made 425 DUI arrests, and recorded 1,099 seatbelt violations and 235 child restraint violations, the release says.
The department said the crash statistics are preliminary findings and can change after the holiday travel period.
