Georgia DPS says Fulton County crash after attempted traffic stop left one woman dead and others injured

The Georgia Department of Public Safety said a Georgia State Trooper attempted to stop a Hyundai Elantra traveling west on Interstate 20 in Fulton County at about 2:40 p.m. for allegedly speeding 90 mph in a 55 mph zone.

According to the agency, the driver was later identified as 26-year-old Fre’shun Tyai White of Marietta, who initially slowed before speeding away, crossing all lanes of Interstate 20 west, exiting onto Boulevard and then merging back onto the interstate.

Georgia DPS said the initial trooper could not safely follow the vehicle back onto Interstate 20 and exited onto Boulevard, while another trooper nearby saw the vehicle merge recklessly into traffic and attempted to catch up.

Before that second trooper had caught up, investigators believe White exited onto the Hill Street ramp at a high rate of speed, lost control, crossed Hill Street and entered a gas station parking lot, where the vehicle struck a parked car.

The agency said Chatanna Ohiyesha Patterson, 51, was standing beside that parked vehicle and suffered fatal injuries. Georgia DPS also said White, a passenger in his vehicle and the driver of the parked car were seriously injured and taken to Grady Hospital.

According to the press release, Fre’shun White has been charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, serious injury by vehicle and other related charges. The investigation remains ongoing, the agency said.
